FDA to Speed up U.S. Food Chemical Reviews, Add Three to Investigation List
- On Friday, the federal agency responsible for regulating food and drugs revealed a revised systematic review approach for chemicals currently present in the U.S. Food supply.
- This initiative follows increased oversight by Health and Human Services due to concerns about many chemicals lacking proper safety studies and the voluntary GRAS disclosure system since 1958.
- The FDA will expedite reviews of phthalates, propylparaben, titanium dioxide, and add BHA, BHT, and ADA to the investigation list, all substances commonly found in foods and currently classified as GRAS.
- BHA has been linked to tumor development in animal experiments, BHT has shown toxic effects on the liver and kidneys, and ADA breaks down into compounds suspected of causing cancer; these substances have been prohibited for use within the European Union, raising concerns about their safety.
- FDA Commissioner Makary emphasized that the agency is focusing its efforts and using top-tier scientific methods to establish a new, comprehensive post-market evaluation process designed to be dependable and transparent for consumers, with the final review framework to be developed in collaboration with stakeholders.
