FDA Panel on the Use of Antidepressants During Pregnancy Is Alarming Experts
UNITED STATES, JUL 23 – FDA expert panel debated potential fetal risks and maternal benefits of SSRIs in pregnancy amid conflicting views and noted that 6% of pregnant women use these antidepressants, studies show.
- A 10-member expert panel assembled by the Food and Drug Administration on Monday morning reviewed SSRIs during pregnancy, including fluoxetine , sertraline , and citalopram .
- Amid pressure from the Make America Healthy Again movement, the FDA prompted the panel, with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. leading the scrutiny of SSRI safety during pregnancy.
- Nine of the panel’s 10 members, mostly researchers and clinicians, questioned SSRI safety, while Dr. Kay Roussos-Ross, a maternal mood disorder specialist, argued SSRIs are safe for most pregnant patients.
- Amid the panel’s findings, experts warned, with `I’m surprised and disappointed by the amount of misinformation that was presented`, said Dr. Katie Unverferth, warning the panel could hinder women's access to needed care.
- Looking ahead, the FDA’s efforts, according to FDA spokesperson, suggest stronger warnings and regulatory reforms may follow, supported by emerging evidence.
