FBI says it thwarted an attack on the Mall of America by a teen it supplied with an assault rifle

Prosecutors say he pledged allegiance to ISIS and planned a shooting at the mall with 200 rounds of ammunition.

  • On Tuesday, FBI agents arrested 18-year-old Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud in Richfield, Minnesota, after he purchased a Norinco AK-47 and 200 rounds of ammunition, allegedly plotting a mass shooting at the Mall of America.
  • The criminal complaint alleges Mohamud messaged an informant for nearly two years, pledging allegiance to ISIS and expressing intent to kill 30 to 60 people at the Bloomington mall because he believed it was owned by Jews.
  • During the transaction with an undercover FBI agent, Mohamud explained that he was "an active member of ISIS." He allegedly sought a fully automatic weapon, receiving four magazines and the rifle before arrest at gunpoint.
  • Federal prosecutors have charged Mohamud with providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen and FBI Minneapolis Field Office Special Agent in Charge Christopher Dotson are scheduled to discuss the operation Wednesday.
  • Prior to his arrest, messages indicated Mohamud planned to target the Hmong Arts Celebration at the Mall of America on October 24. He repeatedly expressed admiration for the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida.
