FASTag users can now switch banks without changing tag as Nitin Gadkari launches OneTag
- On Friday at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari launched OneTag, a portability solution allowing FASTag users to switch issuer banks while retaining their existing physical tag.
- Previously, FASTag users were required to close accounts and obtain new physical tags to switch banks, a time-consuming process that OneTag eliminates by allowing customers to retain their vehicle's Tag ID and registration number.
- The Rajmargyatra Mobile App facilitates the portability process through eligibility checks and secure verification. Once approved, the new issuer assumes service responsibility while the old bank settles pending transactions and wallet balances.
- Gadkari announced plans for a nationwide Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling system by February-March 2027, using overhead gantries to eliminate toll plaza stoppages and allow vehicles to pass at normal speeds without stopping.
- The nationwide transition could save ₹6,000 crore to ₹7,000 crore annually in operational costs. Gadkari noted the economic value of time saved by commuters is estimated at "₹68,500 crore annually.
