Famine is threatening more of war-torn Sudan’s Darfur region as an attack in the south kills 22
Acute malnutrition exceeds famine thresholds in Um Baru and Kernoi, with 53% of children affected in Um Baru, as displacement and conflict worsen food insecurity, UN experts said.
- On Feb 5, the U.N.-backed IPC said acute malnutrition reached famine levels in Umm Baru and Kernoi, North Darfur, but stopped short of a formal famine due to limited access and mortality data.
- The nearly three‑year war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has disrupted food systems and driven widespread hunger, while the October 2025 fall of El‑Fasher triggered mass displacement near the Chad border.
- Limited access to health and nutrition services has strained response capacity across North Darfur, with nearly 53% of children aged 6 months to nearly 5 years in Umm Baru acutely malnourished and only 25% of severely malnourished children in Kernoi enrolled in treatment programmes.
- The Rome-based IPC urged an immediate ceasefire, saying these alarming rates raise the risk of excess mortality and international donors launched a Sudan Humanitarian Fund with $700 million in contributions.
- The IPC warned 20 more areas in Darfur and neighbouring Kordofan are at risk, as the wider conflict has killed over 40,000 and displaced more than 11.8 million.
