Tumbler Ridge MP Backs Mother's Lawsuit Against OpenAI, Blaming It for Shooting Role
MP Bob Zimmer backs lawsuit claiming OpenAI's ChatGPT aided mass shooter despite a prior ban and failing to alert police, after eight killed and a child wounded.
- On Monday, Cia Edmonds filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging the company's ChatGPT bot assisted the mass shooting that wounded her 12-year-old daughter, Maya Gebala. Tumbler Ridge MP Bob Zimmer supports the action, calling it "justified."
- The legal action alleges ChatGPT provided shooter Jesse van Rootselaar with "information, guidance and assistance" to execute the attack. Zimmer says it is "very troubling" that software was "essentially advising somebody" on the crime.
- Eight people died in the shooting last month; OpenAI stated it banned Van Rootselaar last June for problematic interactions but did not notify law enforcement, as she used a second account to bypass the restriction.
- On Tuesday, Attorney General Niki Sharma said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed to an apology that is "sensitive and appropriate." However, Zimmer maintains that an apology is insufficient to address the company's role.
- Premier David Eby noted the province is still deciding whether to join the lawsuit or pursue separate legal action against OpenAI, after suggesting the tragedy could have been prevented.

I Saw the Best and Worst of Humanity in Tumbler Ridge
When I was in high school, a grown man with no association to the students or staff wandered in through the doors and started walking the halls. It must have been lunchtime, because I caught a glimpse of his back before the teachers shooed us to safety until they could remove him from the property. He seemed impossibly tall, like a giant in a dollhouse, towering beneath the building’s stubby ceilings. His clothes were baggy. He might have been b…
