The municipality of Heist-op-den-Berg has received a farewell letter from a resistance fighter from the Second World War. Heist resident Georges Verhaegen wrote the letter to his wife and daughter just before his execution in 1943. "In the letter, he asks his wife that if she remarried, she would choose a partner who would protect their daughter," says his niece Lydie Volkaerts, who has kept the letter for more than 22 years.
