Family died after ‘getting into trouble’ in sea at Shoreham, inquest told
Sussex Police said the deaths are still under investigation, while a fundraiser for funeral and repatriation costs has topped £20,000.
On Wednesday, an inquest opened into the deaths of Hussam El-Khawas, 55, his wife Zeina Alayan, 37, and their daughters Sara El-Khawas, 14, and Saja El-Khawas, 6, who died after getting into difficulty in the sea off Shoreham-by-Sea on August 18.
While lifeboat crews recovered Hussam, Zeina, and Sara at Kingston Beach, Saja died in hospital on August 21 after showing signs of a hypoxic brain injury, Coroner's officer Kelly Truss told the hearing.
Sussex Police investigation remains open, but after reviewing CCTV footage and witness accounts, officers currently believe the deaths were a "tragic accident, with no third-party involvement," the inquest heard.
The Palestinian Forum in Britain raised more than £23,000 to cover funeral and repatriation costs to Lebanon, as visa restrictions prevented family members from traveling to the UK.
Coroner Penelope Schofield adjourned the inquests until March 16 next year, noting that proceedings will resume once the police investigation concludes, and offering her "sincere condolences" to the wider family.
