Families of Arkansas children with disabilities say more action needed on waitlist
More than 2,400 Arkansas families are waiting for supportive living services, and state officials say the program will begin serving some in January.
- On Wednesday, families of children with disabilities packed the Old Supreme Court room at the Arkansas Capitol, urging Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders to take further action toward clearing the waiting list for supportive services.
- More than 2,400 Arkansas families remain on the waitlist for the CES Waiver, which helps individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities live in their communities rather than in institutional settings.
- Governor Sanders announced Tuesday that the state would allocate about $17 million to provide supportive living services to families on the waitlist by January, though the plan does not eliminate the full waitlist.
- Arkansas Support Network CEO Syard Evans noted that provider reimbursement rates have remained unchanged since 2018, while a state study showed supportive living services cost 23% more than what insurers currently reimburse.
- Facing a four-month wait until the next legislative session, parents including Paige McCammon expressed urgent concerns that time is critical for children whose conditions deteriorate without immediate care.
