Small Business Optimism Holds Steady, but Earnings Deterioration a Concern
The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index holds at 98.2, but earnings fell nine points from September and nearly one-third of owners report unfilled job openings, NFIB said.
- This month the National Federation of Independent Business reported its optimism index at 98.2, just above the 52-year average, an `OK environment` for small businesses, Holly Wade said.
- Earnings trends fell nine points from September, a decline Holly Wade described as significant, and more small business owners blame lower profits on weaker sales rather than tight labor or price pressures.
- Nearly a third of small business owners reported job openings they could not fill, with labor quality concerns and construction struggles; only 13% saw expansion as timely while good business health ratings fell to 51%.
- Tariffs are contributing to operating uncertainty and have pushed higher prices for many small businesses, while the government shutdown has affected small businesses with government contracts more acutely, Holly Wade said.
- Despite the decline, the NFIB uncertainty index fell 12 points to 88 this month, from fewer `I don't know` answers, but remains 20 points above the 52-year average, said Holly Wade.
