Biometric forensic technology is increasingly being used by police in solving crimes, helping to identify suspects in high profile cases ranging from riots to sex offences. Though questions remain as to privacy concerns, oversight, and the scope of its use, police say their Facial Recognition Unit uses mugshots and CCTV, not real-time surveillance or access to driver’s licences and passports without formal requests.
