Nigeria: Wike-Backed PDP Faction Announces Emergency Bot, NEC Meetings
Expelled members loyal to Nyesom Wike called emergency meetings amid a standoff at PDP headquarters following recent suspensions, challenging newly inaugurated party leadership.
- On Tuesday, the pro-Wike Peoples Democratic Party faction planned emergency National Executive Council and Board of Trustees meetings at the PDP national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu leading supporters there.
- The PDP suspended Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, Senator Samuel Anyanwu and other allies on Saturday at the National Elective Convention in Ibadan, and Anyanwu issued an emergency meeting notice on Monday barely 48 hours later.
- An ongoing stand-off has developed at the PDP national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, where Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed, and Nyesom Wike are present while security operatives ordered journalists to leave but leaders refused, demanding Wike be removed.
- After entering the NEC Hall, party leaders announced the postponement of BoT and NEC meetings till tomorrow, and new National Chairman Tanimu Turaki vowed to protect democracy, insisting Anyanwu and others were no longer party members.
- Wike forced his way into the secretariat taken over by security operatives while Bala Mohammed, Seyi Makinde, and Tanimu Turaki were inside Bala's car, and the FCT Minister was held up outside.
