FAA releases list of airports impacted by flight reductions, including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles
Flight reductions start at 4% and may reach 10% due to a 2,000-controller staffing shortage amid the government shutdown, affecting thousands of daily flights, FAA said.
- On Friday, November 7, the Federal Aviation Administration announced a 10% flight cut across 40 high-volume U.S. markets, including San Diego International Airport on the ABC News list.
- Amid the ongoing federal government shutdown, FAA officials said staffing shortages in air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration officers working without pay have increased sick calls, forcing cuts.
- Aviation analytics firm Cirium estimated cuts could affect as many as 1,800 commercial flights and upwards of 268,000 seats, while the Federal Aviation Administration directs more than 44,000 flights daily and more than 3.2 million passengers have been impacted.
- Airlines said they will automatically rebook passengers with canceled flights or provide refunds and have begun notifying customers today, while the FAA warned of enforcement including a $US75,000 fine per flight.
- Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said officials warned if funding is not reached, disruptions could expand to about 4,000 flights a day across 40 airports, a risk heightened after the November 4 cargo crash.
