Sainz Says Talk of F1 Racing in Middle East Is 'Premature'
Carlos Sainz says it is premature to assume the season will end in the Middle East as F1 prepares an Imola backup.
On Thursday, Williams driver Carlos Sainz called Formula One's season finale plans "premature," though the FIA and Formula One Management maintain the calendar will proceed as scheduled in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Tensions have resurfaced this week after U.S. authorities ordered embassy staff to return home before November 3 midterm elections, while plans for potential military operations against Iran create further uncertainty.
While FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem insisted the races "are going to happen," Sainz admitted it is "difficult to be convinced" given ongoing Middle East developments.
Formula One has prepared Italy's Imola circuit as a potential backup venue, providing financial guarantees to ensure the track remains ready should the Middle East races be cancelled.
F1 would be an outlier in successfully hosting events if the finale proceeds, as several high-profile events including the World Endurance Championship's Qatar round were disrupted this year.
