Extreme heat, wildfires sweep the Southwest
Extreme heat is drying out fuels in the Southwest, increasing wildfire risks, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Casey Oswant in San Diego.
Monsoon moisture usually helps lessen wildfire season, said Megan Taylor, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Long periods of hot, dry, and windy weather have made fuels more prone to catching fire, explained Braeden Winters of the National Weather Service.
High, continuous temperatures increase the risk of heat illnesses, especially for vulnerable groups, warned National Weather Service meteorologist Christine Kruse in Salt Lake City.
