A cold wave of unusual rigor in Argentina, even for the southern winter, has dropped record temperatures and caused the death of at least nine people across the country for 10 days, while the homeless population is on the rise, according to a specialized NGO.
Cold records were recorded in the Atacama desert in Chile, where snow fell for the first time in a decade, as in Buenos Aires and Montevideo.
The unusually strong cold has already claimed several lives, and authorities say the situation may worsen in the coming days.
