Extinction Rebellion protest in Netherlands ends with 1,500 arrested
- More than 1,500 activists from the Extinction Rebellion group were arrested by police in The Hague as they protested against Dutch fossil fuel subsidies by blocking a motorway.
- Dutch police used water cannon to disperse the protesters and arrested the activists on charges including vandalism. Among the protesters was actress Carice van Houten who was also arrested but was later released.
- The Dutch prosecution service said most of those arrested will not be prosecuted as it was a "minor offence" but 40 people will still be prosecuted for other criminal offences.
