Taiwan Trade Surplus Grows In September
AI and technology demand drove the surge, with information, communication and audio-video products and electronic components setting record monthly export values, the ministry said.
- Taiwan's exports hit a monthly record of US$87.22 billion in September, marking 35 consecutive months of year-on-year growth and breaking the previous 34-month streak from 1985 and 1988, the Ministry of Finance said Thursday.
- Booming demand for artificial intelligence servers and high-tech products powered the shipments, supported by robust global investment in technological innovation, tight electronics supply chain capacity keeping prices elevated, and inventory buildup ahead of new consumer electronics launches.
- Information and communication products roughly doubled to US$39.13 billion with triple-digit gains in graphics cards and servers, while electronic components surged 45.3 percent to US$31.13 billion, both posting their second-highest monthly export values on record.
- Taiwan's monthly trade surplus reached US$23.63 billion, an all-time high and up 92.2 percent year-on-year, as imports rose 51.7 percent to a record US$63.59 billion but exports grew faster.
- Ministry of Finance Director-General Beatrice Tsai said Taiwan's exports are entering a "historic and brilliant moment," with fourth-quarter exports likely pushing annual totals above US$900 billion, though geopolitical tensions and trade policy shifts remain risks.
