Greek Crude Oil Tanker Off Oman Reports Explosion and Fuel Leak
UK Maritime Trade Operations said the crew were safe after the blast, which damaged the tanker and spilled bunker fuel into the sea.
On Tuesday, an explosion damaged the Greek-owned tanker Olympic Life as it sailed in the Arabian Sea, 60 nautical miles east of Oman, with the master reporting an external explosion above the waterline.
The incident came shortly after Iran's IRGC vowed revenge for U.S. overnight strikes on boats attempting to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz and missile sites on shore; U.S. officials called the strikes self-defense.
Built in 2019 and registered in the Marshall Islands, the Olympic Life sustained damage but no crew injuries, while unofficial reports indicated two IRGC boats were destroyed during the military exchange.
CENTCOM confirmed the blockade of Iran remains fully operational with 108 commercial vessels redirected as of Tuesday, supported by 15,000 troops and more than 200 aircraft and warships including carrier strike groups.
Iran's Supreme Leader vowed the Middle East will not be a "shield" for U.S. forces, while the Strait of Hormuz—carrying one-fifth of global oil production—remains critical as three liquefied natural gas tankers recently navigated through.
