Experts weigh in on AI doomsday predictions
Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned earlier this month over concerns that AI companies are not acting responsibly, with senior staff member Evan Hubinger estimating a greater than 10 per cent chance of humanity-ending outcomes in the next decade.
Stanford University researchers synthesized 16 new viruses using a genetic language AI model last month, illustrating the AI Futures Project's 2027 scenario in which superintelligent AI could release dangerous bioweapons into the atmosphere.
The 2010 Stuxnet computer worm breached Iran's nuclear centrifuges despite offline safeguards, raising fears AI could infiltrate nuclear command chains and trigger conflict resulting in radioactive fallout or "nuclear winter."
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned this month that swarms of AI agents could be capable of "taking over" the internet within months, potentially disrupting electrical grids and financial institutions with botnets.
UNSW Professor Toby Walsh suggests these scenarios confuse intelligence with power, noting real-world friction prevents even superintelligent AI from imposing goals, while Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom warned of "false utopia" outcomes in 2003.
