Until the 1980s, many states were dumping their nuclear waste in the Atlantic. During a four-week expedition, scientists were detecting thousands of barrels of radioactive waste. Some of the containers were deformed or torn open.
At least 200,000 barrels of nuclear waste are suspected on the North Atlantic. Researchers have inspected some of them on a search mission and detected damage to containers.
The "Nodssum" mission aimed to identify radioactive waste in the Atlantic Ocean until the early 1990s.
Several states disposed of barrels with nuclear waste in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean decades ago. With the help of a diving robot, an expedition has now come to them.
