Expansion plans could boost vehicle recycling at Hampshire site
Silverlake aims to boost vehicle processing by 33%, increasing reusable parts per vehicle up to 32 to support recycling of electric and hybrid car batteries.
- On Wednesday, March 18, the Hampshire County Council regulatory committee will review Silverlake Automotive Recycling's application to expand its Botley Road, Shedfield site.
- Because of the shift to low-carbon transport, Silverlake has operated at the site for 80 years and argues investment is needed now to meet rising demand for recycling hybrid and electric vehicles.
- Raising parts recovery from about eight to between 24 and 32 per vehicle, the proposal would increase annual vehicle processing from 30,000 to 40,000, Silverlake says.
- Planning officers recommended refusal, as the council report warned the development would cause 'unacceptable visual harm' and a 'significant adverse impact' on the surrounding rural landscape.
- The applicant says environmental and carbon benefits outweigh perceived landscape harm, with Allen Prebble stressing safe disposal of end-of-life vehicles and specialist handling of EV battery packs.
