American Investors Dip Into English Rugby as Exeter Chiefs Bought by U.S. Owners of Bournemouth
Black Knight Rugby said the purchase gives Bill Foley’s sports portfolio its first American investment in English professional rugby.
On Tuesday, Black Knight Rugby, a subsidiary of Cannae Holdings, completed a 100% purchase of Exeter Chiefs, marking the first American-led investment in a top-flight English rugby union club.
This transaction ends 155 years of member ownership at the Chiefs, transitioning the club into a new franchise era as English rugby adopts financial sustainability models.
Cannae Holdings documents show a £19m investment in the club, which will be governed by a new three-person executive board including Bill Foley, CEO Ryan Caswell, and Chief Executive Tony Rowe.
"Exeter adds another attractive sports asset to our portfolio," said CEO Ryan Caswell, as the acquisition expands Foley's empire to include AFC Bournemouth and the Vegas Golden Knights.
RFU CEO Bill Sweeney welcomed the move as "a positive signal for the future of professional rugby," as English clubs adopt this model to improve financial sustainability within the Gallagher PREM.
