Trump Appointee Bill Pulte’s Housing Agency Obstructed Watchdog, Report Says
The watchdog said FHFA blocked records during at least three reviews and cut its funding by 80%, limiting oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
On Friday, the Federal Housing Finance Agency's Office of Inspector General released a report alleging the agency blocked records and interfered with its oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Since his appointment in March 2025, Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte has increasingly politicized the regulator, targeting perceived enemies including Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Despite the watchdog being "entitled to access 'all records,'" the agency refused to provide data for three recent reviews, the OIG report found.
FHFA cut the watchdog's funding a month ago, threatening about 80 staff members with termination; acting head James Hodge warned the cuts prevent the office from performing mandated duties.
Flagging interference for the first time in a decade, the OIG report details an extreme escalation of the agency's challenge to the watchdog's authority and independence.
