GM to offer hybrid SUVs in strategic pivot from electric: Report
The move follows dealer complaints and rising U.S. hybrid demand as GM tries to regain market share from Toyota and Honda.
General Motors plans to produce hybrid versions of the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia at its Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant, marking a strategic shift toward electrified powertrains.
Dealers have pressured GM to introduce hybrids as the automaker's U.S. market share dropped to 16.6% this year from 17.4% last year, while hybrid leaders Toyota and Honda gained ground.
GM will invest over $2 billion in the Lansing region, including $1.25 billion for the assembly plant, while restructuring a $500 million U.S. Department of Energy grant to support hybrid production.
CEO Mary Barra told analysts last week the automaker will introduce hybrids in multiple segments, a pivot from its previous all-electric focus following changes under the Trump administration.
The Lansing Delta Township factory, which produced a record 291,000 vehicles in 2025, will serve as the production hub, though GM provided no specific timeline for when the hybrid models will launch.
