Gotham Signs Australian Striker Sam Kerr Through the 2030 Season
The Australian striker returns as a free agent and will chase NWSL scoring records after six and a half seasons at Chelsea.
On Monday, Gotham FC announced that Australian striker Sam Kerr has signed through the 2030 season, marking her return to the National Women's Soccer League and her former club.
Since departing for Chelsea in 2019, Kerr missed the NWSL's transformation; Gotham rebranded from Sky Blue FC in 2021 and moved to Red Bull Arena, becoming a championship contender.
Kerr remains the NWSL's all-time regular-season scoring leader with 77 goals. She said, "Gotham as a club has completely changed, and if I was going to come back to a club, it was to one that wants to win trophies."
Gotham president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West called the signing a "landmark moment," as Kerr will debut after the July 14 transfer window opens, joining teammates Esther González and Rose Lavelle.
The signing underscores the NWSL's evolution; team entry costs have soared to over $200 million since the league expanded to 16 teams, positioning Gotham to compete for major trophies with world-class talent.
