Ex-Cop Gets 5 Years for Stealing Bitcoins He Helped Seize From Silk Road
UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 16 – Paul Chowles exploited his role to steal 50 Bitcoin worth over £4.4 million today, laundering funds through mixing services and converting £144,000 for personal expenses, court heard.
- On Wednesday, Paul Chowles was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison, by Liverpool Crown Court.
- During the Silk Road 2.0 investigation, the NCA and FBI seized 97 Bitcoin from Thomas White, as part of the digital investigation team.
- The stolen funds were routed through Bitcoin Fog mixing service, prosecutors said, then spent about £144,580, according to CPS calculations.
- The NCA said its anti-corruption unit fully supported the probe, while Chowles was dismissed this month for gross misconduct.
- At sentencing, police noted the stolen Bitcoin are now worth over £4.4 million, highlighting challenges in tracking digital assets.
