Ex-FIFA governance chief says Infantino ineligible for re-election, members urged to act
FairSquare says the FIFA president has already served the maximum three terms and is urging 52 member associations to back its challenge.
On Tuesday, former FIFA Governance Committee head Miguel Maduro stated Gianni Infantino cannot stand for a fourth term as FIFA President, citing Article 33 of the statutes as human rights group FairSquare urged member associations to declare him ineligible.
Article 33 of the FIFA statutes restricts presidents to three terms; however, the FIFA Council ruled in 2022 that Infantino's initial three-year term beginning in 2016 did not count, leaving him eligible to seek re-election in 2027.
Maduro, a Portuguese lawyer removed from his post in 2017 after blocking Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko's appointment, argued the rules make no distinction for incomplete terms and claimed a "climate of fear" prevents associations from acting.
FairSquare has contacted 52 member associations to challenge the candidacy, with director and co-founder Nicholas McGeehan meeting Norwegian football officials on Wednesday to urge adherence to basic FIFA rules.
Despite these challenges, Infantino maintains a commanding position among FIFA's 211 voting members with support from most confederations, with the candidacy submission deadline arriving in two weeks.
