Ex-England rugby star Tom Voyce was almost three times over the limit during fatal ford crash
Former England rugby player Tom Voyce had a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit when his vehicle was swept away attempting to cross a flooded ford during Storm Darragh.
- Tom Voyce, 43, a former England rugby player, died after driving his Toyota Hilux into the River Aln in Northumberland while over the legal drink-drive limit.
- At the inquest, it was revealed that Voyce had a blood alcohol level of 215 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of blood, which would have impaired his judgment and coordination.
- Despite speculation that Voyce may have tried to reverse out of the water, the coroner concluded that flooding gave the illusion of a flat road when in reality the ford dropped 6ft.
