EVs take record share of used car market
Electric cars now make up 4.0% of used car sales in the UK, with 80,614 sold last quarter despite government tax plans that may slow growth.
- In the three months to the end of September, 2,021,265 used car transactions were recorded in the United Kingdom, with pure electric models reaching a 4.0% market share, up from 2.8% last year.
- Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show 80,614 pure battery electric cars were sold between July and September, driving rising consumer preference for electric vehicles.
- SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes warned tax on vehicles from Employee Car Ownership Schemes could hamper electric motoring, adding that a robust used EV market is essential for fleet renewal.
- Chancellor Rachel Reeves is reportedly considering a 3p per mile charge on electric car drivers from 2028, potentially affecting six million drivers and costing around £12 for a London–Edinburgh trip.
- The policy is expected to close Employee Car Ownership Schemes, risking consumer choice, affordability, and decarbonisation while stifling supply and cutting Exchequer revenue.
