Evacuations Ordered in La Plata County, Colorado Due to Flooding
Officials said floodwater and road hazards remain after evacuations were lifted, with crews still cleaning debris and assessing damage across the region.
On Sunday, severe flooding across La Plata County prompted evacuation orders for mobile home parks and residential neighborhoods in Durango, Ignacio, Hesperus, the Animas Valley, and Bayfield as rising water threatened homes and access routes.
Heavy rainfall from Saturday through Monday—ranging from 2.5 to 4.5 inches across the region—triggered back-to-back floods that left residents scrambling to secure their homes before winter arrived.
Severe flooding damaged U.S. 160, described as a "critical route," at several points along a 100-mile stretch between Durango and South Fork, prompting $10.5 million in federal funding for repairs.
A total of 73 people sought refuge at shelters in Durango, Ignacio, and Bayfield after officials estimated 10 to 15 homes were destroyed by the flooding.
Cleanup efforts began yesterday as meteorologist Brianna Bealo noted a minor weather system approaching today that could produce more showers, while officials emphasize reopening roads before winter.
