Leaders of European Powers to Meet for Ukraine Talks
Leaders are expected to coordinate more air-defence aid for Ukraine and prepare for the July NATO summit, after G7 allies agreed to boost supplies.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz will host leaders from France, Britain, Italy, and Poland in Berlin on June 24 to discuss the Ukraine conflict and an upcoming NATO summit, the German government confirmed Monday.
Established in 2024, the informal E5 Group coordinates European defense standards and arms production to support Ukraine against the Russian invasion and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will join via video link, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer remains set to attend despite tendering his resignation Monday and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will also participate.
Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said the meeting focuses on preparing for the NATO summit in Ankara on July 7th and 8th, while also addressing Ukraine and the Middle East.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Europe to increase support as U.S. efforts fade, while a European Union official reported the EU chief Antonio Costa's office made "brief contacts at diplomatic level" with Moscow to open communication channels.
The government announced that the president of the council, Giorgia Meloni, would participate in the meeting with its British, French, German and Polish counterparts, in order to improve coordination to support Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion.
The leaders of the main European military powers will meet on Wednesday in Berlin, announced Italy and Germany on Monday, as Europe seeks to play a more important role in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
