One of Maastricht University's best-known professors, Mathieu Segers, has died at the age of 47. Segers had been ill for quite some time, a spokesperson for Maastricht University said on Sunday. The professor wrote books about European history and was a welcome guest on NPO Radio 1 and Buitenhof, among others. Two years ago, together with former minister Ingrid van Engelshoven (D66), he formed a new coalition in the Maastricht City Council.
At the end of 2020, Segers was diagnosed with colon cancer. In interviews, he spoke openly about his illness.
For seven years, he wrote columns for the FD as a Europe expert.
