The European Commission is moving towards a new model of “gradual integration” for candidate countries, offering access to the single market before full membership. This plan links economic benefits with geopolitical alignment, safeguarding democracy and protecting cutting-edge technologies. At the same time, the EU is considering internal changes to decision-making to cope with enlargement.
Candidate countries, some of which have been waiting decades to become EU members, will be offered unprecedented "gradual integration" into the single market, including barrier-free trade and access to research programs, while the accession process continues, according to the draft plan, parts of which are published by Politiko.
