Exact Date New Entry Rules Will Come in for Brits Travelling to Parts of Europe
SPAIN, JUL 30 – The Entry/Exit System will collect biometric data to track overstays and refused entries, replacing passport stamps across 27 EU countries and Schengen states.
- The European Union announced on July 30, 2025, that the Entry/Exit System for non-EU nationals will launch on October 12 across 27 countries, except Ireland and Cyprus.
- The automated border system was first agreed on in 2017 but its initial launch planned for last November was delayed because several countries were not ready.
- The phased rollout will collect travellers' personal details and biometric data, including facial images and fingerprints, with member states gradually implementing the system over six months.
- EU commissioner Magnus Brunner stated that implementing the new system over a six-month period will allow countries, travelers, and companies sufficient opportunity to adapt, while enhancing security by detecting overstayers and minimizing fraud.
- Britain's Foreign Office warned travellers to expect longer waits at borders since EES may add extra minutes per passenger, and information campaigns will prepare people for changes before launch.
