China driving worrying rise in EU imports, Commission official says
The European Union is tightening its trade defenses against the rapid increase in imports from China. 27 new investigations were launched in 2026, with machinery, textiles, base metals, and chemicals sectors feeling the most intense pressure.
As Chinese goods continue to flood the European market, the EU is stepping up its monitoring of surging imports. EU Chief Trade Commissioner Denis Redonnet said on Thursday (October 1) that the latest monitoring data shows a “potentially worrying trend” in nearly a quarter of EU imports, with Chinese goods being the main driving factor.
The European Union is transforming a team created to monitor the effects of the US-China trade war into a warning tool on the rise in Chinese imports. Brussels says it already detects potentially worrying trends in several product categories.
Almost a quarter of imports to the European Union are growing "at a worrying pace." The evolution is driven in particular by goods from China, EU trade policy chief negotiator Dennis Redonet announced on Thursday.
