EU observers back Colombia vote count amid challenge to results
Observers said they saw no irregularities as more than 26 million voters awaited a recount in a race the losing side is challenging.
The European Union mission confirmed the transparency and efficiency of Colombia's presidential runoff vote count despite President Gustavo Petro's doubts about the results.
About 150 EU observers monitored the runoff election, which showed Abelardo de la Espriella leading by approximately 1% or nearly 251,000 votes, with almost all votes counted.
Mission chief Esteban González Pons stated that no irregularities were observed in the vote counting process.
Iván Cepeda is challenging the results from over 30,000 polling stations and demands a recount before recognizing the outcome.
The Electoral Observation Mission of the European Union (EOM/EU) assured this Tuesday that Registroduria, in charge of organizing the presidential contest, which, according to the pre-count, has favored Abelardo de la Espriella, has worked "in a transparent and effective manner and with great independence, despite the logistical and security challenges in certain areas of the country".
