EU hits Google with $1 billion fine over its Play app store and search
The Commission ordered Google to change search rankings and Play Store rules within 60 days or face periodic penalty payments.
- On Thursday, the European Commission fined Google 890 million euros for breaking digital antitrust regulations by steering consumers toward its own services and apps to the detriment of competitors.
- The fine follows a March 2024 investigation under the Digital Markets Act, which sets rules for large tech companies dominating digital markets. Google had recently lost its appeal of a $4.5 billion antitrust fine related to Android dominance.
- Of the total penalty, 460 million euros addresses Google's search engine allegedly giving preferential treatment to Google Shopping, Hotels, and Flights while downgrading competitors. The remaining 430 million euros concerns accusations that Google prevents app developers from promoting cheaper offers outside its ecosystem.
- Google President of Global Affairs Kent Walker criticized the fine as "product degradation driven by a small group of self-serving complainants," while Executive Vice President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition Teresa Ribiera said consumers have the right to choose the best offers.
- The penalty arrives as the Trump administration prepares new trade duties, having repeatedly described European digital regulations as a trade "irritant" that it equates with commercial tariffs. Google must comply within 60 days or face penalty payments of up to 5% of worldwide turnover.
