US to leave UN cultural agency Unesco again, diplomats say
UNITED STATES, JUL 23 – The U.S. will exit UNESCO again due to concerns over anti-Israel bias and divisive agendas, despite providing 8% of the agency’s budget, with withdrawal effective end of 2026.
- On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the United States announced it will again pull out of UNESCO, marking its third overall exit and second under President Donald Trump, with departure set for December 31, 2026.
- Amid an `America First` doctrine, White House officials said the exit aligns with their `America First` foreign policy and rejects UNESCO’s `progressive, globalist ideological agenda`.
- Amid the withdrawal, UNESCO noted voluntary contributions from other member states and private donors have doubled over the past six years, UNESCO said, and the United States’ share now stands at 8% following major reforms.
- In response, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said she `deeply regretted` the decision, adding that it `contradicts the principles of international dialogue` and could affect American stakeholders directly.
- Despite the impending departure, UNESCO says it is better equipped than after the 2017 exit to withstand the financial and diplomatic impact, with no layoffs anticipated and ongoing cooperation with American academia, civil society, and the private sector.
