EU Agrees to Sanction 1,600 People and Entities Linked to Russia's War
The package targets Russia’s military-industrial complex and 77 figures linked to elections in occupied Ukrainian territory, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Oct. 7, EU ambassadors approved approximately 1,650 new sanctions against Russia, marking the largest package since the 2022 invasion. Measures primarily target Russia's military-industrial complex and individuals involved in elections within occupied Ukrainian territories.
- About 1,570 of these listings target entities and individuals involved in Russia's military-industrial complex, with over half concentrated on missile production. These sanctions aim to restrict Moscow's ability to manufacture weapons and obtain critical technology.
- Ambassadors also approved listings against 77 people purportedly elected to the Russian State Duma from Ukrainian territories occupied by Moscow. These measures target individuals involved in extending Russia's political system into those regions.
- While the measures are not yet legally final, they are expected to be submitted to foreign ministers for formal adoption on Monday, Oct. 12. Listed individuals generally face asset freezes and travel bans throughout the bloc.
- Separately, the bloc extended a framework targeting chemical weapons proliferation, currently applying to 31 individuals and six entities. The bloc already has sanctions against nearly 3,000 individuals and entities associated with Russia's invasion.
