Back in 2023, it was decided that stricter documentation requirements would be introduced for products like coffee and beef. However, the rules for forest protection have now been relaxed – with the votes of right-wing parties.
For products such as coffee, cocoa and soya, forests are no longer to be cut down. An EU regulation should already apply. Now it will be postponed for the second time.
The regulation is intended to require proof of the deforestation-free origin of certain products such as coffee, cocoa, soya or beef. Parliament and EU countries still have to formally approve the amendment.
This is the result of the recent negotiations between negotiators of the EU Parliament and the EU states. Now, the rules of the so-called deforestation regulation are being postponed again – for large companies by one year and for small companies by mid-2027.
