Ethiopian prime minister's party easily wins parliamentary election
The ruling party secured 438 of 486 seats as turnout reached 94%, after opposition parties stayed divided and voting was skipped in Tigray.
- On Sunday, the National Elections Board announced that the Prosperity Party won a landslide victory in the June 1 legislative elections, securing almost 90 per cent of the contested seats.
- Roughly 40 million people participated in the poll across 501 of 547 constituencies, with the Prosperity Party securing 438 of those seats among 54 million registered voters.
- The NEBE delayed results originally due June 11 after technical difficulties and unrest in the Amhara and Oromia regions, where armed groups blocked access to polling stations.
- Voting did not occur in the restive Tigray region, marking the second consecutive time the area was excluded from national elections since 2021.
- Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who has led Ethiopia since 2018, faces criticism for growing authoritarianism following the 2020-2022 civil war in Tigray, where about 600,000 people are estimated to have died.
