Ethiopian national charged with sexual assault at asylum hotel

On Monday , Hampshire Constabulary charged Melaku Gebresembet with sexual assault after an alleged incident on Friday at Highfield House Hotel.
The Highfield House Hotel in Portswood has been the focus of repeated anti-immigration protests and counter-demonstrations, while defence says Gebresembet is from Eritrea and awaiting an asylum decision.
Hampshire Constabulary attended the hotel, took statements, and arrested the suspect, while Mr Heath said the complainant was 'approached out of nowhere' and CCTV shows contact on their elbow and upper arm.
Magistrates remanded the defendant and prosecutor Graham Heath appealed bail, so Gebresembet remains in custody pending a Southampton Crown Court decision, with trial set for April 6, 2027.
Gebresembet pleaded not guilty at court and defence solicitor Khalid Missouri said he went to investigate a noise, adding `He doesn't know where his hand went but if he did touch it wasn't sexual.
