Report: Ethiopia Hosts Secret Camp to Train Sudan’s RSF Fighters

Ethiopia’s secret camp trains over 4,300 Rapid Support Forces fighters with UAE logistical and military support amid Sudan’s escalating civil war, Reuters analysis shows.

  • On Feb 10, 2026 Reuters reported Ethiopia is hosting a secret camp training thousands for the Rapid Support Forces in Menge district, Benishangul-Gumuz near the Sudan border.
  • The UAE financed and supported the project, providing trainers and logistics, while supporting Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed since 2018 with aid and signing a 2025 air and defence cooperation agreement, plus a Jan 6 joint statement.
  • Satellite imagery shows more than 640 tents at the camp, and Airbus imagery shows tents filling the area from early November; on November 17, a convoy of 56 trucks carried trainees, while as of early January, 4,300 RSF fighters were training there.
  • The report is the first direct evidence of Ethiopian involvement, while regional officials warned the camp's proximity to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam raises risks and the UAE foreign ministry denied involvement; the Ethiopian government spokesperson, army and Sudanese Armed Forces did not respond.
  • A diplomatic cable said the site could hold up to 10,000 fighters, while Janes defence intelligence company found the camp accommodates at least 2,500 people and nearby drone ground control supports RSF supply.
