Essence the only Restaurant Awarded Two Stars in New Zealand's First Michelin Guide
Essence’s two-star win highlights New Zealand’s debut Michelin Guide, which named 100 restaurants and gave first-time awards across four cities.
Queenstown's Essence became the only restaurant in New Zealand to receive two Michelin stars in the country's inaugural guide, with Chef Paul Froggatt accepting the honor and receiving a standing ovation.
Michelin Guide international director Gwendal Poullennec announced the selection of 100 restaurants across four New Zealand regions, awarding 14 one-star ratings and 35 Bib Gourmand designations after months of anonymous dining inspections.
Inspectors evaluated ingredients, flavor harmony, and technique, selecting one-star recipients including Auckland's Ahi, Christchurch's Inati, and Tala, the first Samoan restaurant worldwide to receive the honor.
Tourism New Zealand invested $6.3 million to attract 36,000 additional international visitors, a move Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said will "showcase everything we know we do well."
The partnership spans at least two more years, with Poullennec describing the launch as "the beginning and a first step" toward potentially expanding the guide's scope beyond the initial four regions.
