Esquimalt couple dealing with dementia, walk to show others they’re not alone

The couple will join more than 2,000 B.C. walkers to raise funds for dementia programs, services, education and research.

  • On Sunday, May 31, Jim and Dawn will join more than 2,000 B.C. residents in Victoria's IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's, starting at Fisherman's Wharf Park for a gentle two-kilometre waterfront walk.
  • When Dawn received a dementia diagnosis in 2019 after visiting her doctor for back pain, the couple approached it as their next chapter, saying 'O.K. I guess this is the next adventure,' and were referred to Alzheimer Society of BC and Yukon.
  • Through Minds in Motion and individual support groups, Jim and Dawn built lasting connections with other couples while becoming teachers for their community, with Dawn noting 'We're constantly adjusting to see, what does this day look like?'.
  • Proceeds from the walk will provide in-person and virtual programs, services and education for families navigating dementia, plus critical research to advance the field, with registration available at support.alzheimer.ca.
  • Having lived adventurously over 55 years aboard a 42-foot motor cruiser they built and traveling the world, Jim and Dawn continue their commitment to community engagement and resilience in facing dementia.
