ESET Research uncovers variants of AsyncRAT, popular choice of cybercriminals
PRAGUE AND BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA, JUL 15 – ESET Research reveals AsyncRAT's modular design has led to many variants used in cyberattacks, with DcRat, VenomRAT, and SilverRAT being the most prevalent, according to telemetry.
- On July 15, 2025, ESET Research published an analysis focusing on AsyncRAT, a remote access trojan made publicly available on GitHub in 2019, along with its numerous forks and variants, highlighting its prevalence in Prague and Bratislava, Slovakia.
- AsyncRAT's modular design and flexibility have led to the creation of more than 30 derivative versions, making it easier for inexperienced cybercriminals to use and distribute complex malware.
- The most popular forks are DcRat, VenomRAT, and SilverRAT, with DcRat accounting for 24% and VenomRAT for 8% of unique sample infections, while lesser-known forks like SantaRAT and BoratRAT, created as jokes, make up under 1%.
- ESET researcher Nikola Knežević highlighted VenomRAT as a particularly worrisome fork within the malware family, citing its advanced stealth features, extensive plugins, and strong offensive capabilities.
- The continual development of AsyncRAT and its derivatives highlights the need for advanced detection methods and comprehensive behavioral examination to successfully counter the rising threats affecting tens of thousands of compromised devices.
