Giant Object From Deep Space Spotted Blazing Through Our Solar System
- On July 3, 2025, astronomers announced they had identified 3I/Atlas, a fast-moving interstellar visitor passing through our solar system.
- An observatory in Chile, involved with the ATLAS project supported by NASA, first spotted the object on July 1, and subsequent analysis traced its path back to at least June 14.
- 3I/Atlas is classified as a comet, estimated 10 to 20 km wide, zooming at more than 60 km per second, and it will pass just inside Mars's orbit without threat.
- Dr. Richard Moissl said, "the object poses no threat to Earth," and Dr. Norris noted its speed exceeds previous interstellar visitors, estimating up to 10,000 such objects drift through the solar system.
- Scientists continue refining data on 3I/Atlas's shape and composition, seeing it as mostly ice, while future observatories like Vera C. Rubin may find such visitors monthly.
