Erdoğan government in Turkey dismisses CHP’s provincial leadership in Istanbul, deploying massive police forces
The government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has entered a new phase of its judicial operation targeting fundamental democratic rights and the Kemalist Republican People’s Party (CHP), which emerged as the leading party in the March 2024 local elections.
The police storm the headquarters of the largest Turkish opposition party CHP in Istanbul. In Turkey, President Erdoğan is getting more and more out of the way of his opponents, because he can hardly hold on to power by political means.
Gürsel Tekin, appointed as a trustee to the CHP Istanbul by court order, arrived at the CHP's former provincial headquarters in Sarıyer. In a statement to the press, Tekin said:
A poll conducted after the trustee dispute at the CHP Istanbul Provincial Headquarters revealed that voters held the CHP headquarters most responsible. Eighty-five percent of participants agreed that the CHP headquarters should have reached an agreement with Gürsel Tekin and carried out the handover without a fight.
CHP Istanbul Deputy Ali Gökçek reacted to the police using pepper spray at close range in front of the CHP Istanbul Provincial Headquarters.
