Eramet plans $350 million lithium expansion in Argentina
The expansion would add 11,000 metric tons of annual lithium carbonate equivalent capacity, subject to a final investment decision, the company said.
- On Thursday, Eramet announced plans to invest about $350 million to expand its Centenario-Ratones lithium project in Argentina, seeking inclusion under the government's RIGI investment incentive scheme following high-level meetings in Paris.
- CEO Christel Bories met with President Javier Milei, Presidential Chief-of-Staff Karina Milei, and Economy Minister Luis Caputo in Paris to advance the project, building on Eramet's $950 million investment in Argentina since 2011.
- The expansion aims to add 11,000 tonnes of annual lithium carbonate capacity to the existing 24,000-tonne Centenario-Ratones facility, subject to a final investment decision expected by the end of 2027.
- Eramet is simultaneously planning a $565 million capital increase and asset sales to manage debt, having bought out its Chinese partner Tsingshan from the Centenario facility in 2024.
- Bories stated that "Argentina possesses the necessary resources and industrial potential to play an increasingly important role in the global lithium industry," positioning Centenario within a regional triangle spanning Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia.
